Why choose a wood-burning designer fireplace?
Wood fire: a source of heat and a pleasure to use
An Ecodesign-compliant closed wood-burning fireplace provides sustainable heating, with high efficiency and optimised combustion. A wood-burning fireplace requires a flue. Wood is also a renewable energy source: the first that humankind learned to master, and one that lies at the origin of human development.
Wood reveals the flame in its most authentic movement: a fire that is alive, never the same from one moment to the next. Feeding the fire, tending the flames and watching the combustion down to the embers: these age-old gestures shape the way fire is used.
Focus wood-burning designer fireplaces
The Focus wood-burning fireplace collection includes several fireplaces recognised with awards for both their design and their performance in energy and environmental terms.
The Grappus, a floor-standing model created by designer Thibault Desombre, received an Étoile de l'Observeur du design in 2013 and the Red Dot Award in 2014.
The first Focus wood-burning designer fireplace to receive a German Design Award was the Slimfocus, in 2017: its flue is its only form, the ultimate expression of fireplace minimalism. Ecodesign-compliant from the outset, it stands out for its sealed-combustion version, which supplies combustion air without the need to drill through the floor or wall, and without disrupting the balance of mechanical ventilation systems — designed for airtight, low-energy homes.
The Gyrofocus, in its glazed Ecodesign wood-burning reissue, received an Archiproducts Design Award with a Special Mention for Sustainability in 2021, followed by the German Design Award in 2023: two distinctions recognising its preserved organic design and high efficiency.
Three models, three approaches to fire, and the same high standards in design and performance.
How has Focus evolved its wood-burning fireplaces?
Historic models reissued in closed versions
Wood has been Focus's native energy since its beginnings, marked by the creation of the Gyrofocus in 1968, the world's first suspended and rotating fireplace. This historic collection now forms the Focus Origins models. In 2014, Focus began the transformation of its iconic suspended and rotating models, in order to anticipate regulatory changes in energy and environmental requirements. The brand then invested heavily in a research and development department dedicated to this undertaking.
The Gyrofocus was thus reissued in a glazed version as early as 2021, followed by the Domofocus and the Ergofocus in 2022. Their form remains faithful to the original design: the only visible difference is a glass front that closes the fireplace. Each model spans the decades without losing its identity or its sculptural presence. As for the Focus limited editions, they remain works of art made to order.
Technology adapted to the original design
The organic forms of Focus design were not conceived with a closed fireplace meeting current standards in mind. Focus made a choice unique in the sector: adapting the combustion chamber to the existing design. Closing its fireplaces without altering a single line was a technical and industrial challenge, which gave rise to a patented technology.
This work does, however, multiply the complexity of assembly: fifteen parts were enough for an original fireplace, whereas the same model in its closed version now requires nearly two hundred. This precision is akin to goldsmithing: every part is assembled by hand by the craftspeople of the manufacture. Since 2023, the company has held the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant label, a French State distinction recognising excellence in craftsmanship.
This demanding approach enables designs more than fifty years old to meet current criteria, without reinterpretation or compromise on design.
Which models and what installation requirements?
Central, suspended or wall-mounted fireplace
Focus wood-burning fireplaces can be installed in three configurations.
- In the centre of a room, the fireplace can be seen from every angle; the only rotating model on a stand, the Eurofocus lets you turn its flat vertical firebox through 360 degrees.
- Suspended from the ceiling, it is freed from the floor: fuelled by wood, it rotates through 360° without limit, so the flame can be directed freely.
- Built into a wall, it becomes part of the existing architecture with a reduced footprint.
Each configuration responds to a different use and spatial constraint, depending on the living space. Several fireplaces are also available as Focus outdoor models, installed on a covered terrace.
Flue, clearance distances and preliminary study
A wood-burning fireplace requires a flue, sized by the dealer to ensure the fireplace operates correctly in the home. Clearance distances from combustible materials around the installation (fireplace and flue) must be respected. A preliminary study with a Focus-authorised dealer confirms the feasibility of the project before any order is placed, including the flue and connection.
