A rotating wood-burning stove is a closed fireplace that turns around the axis of its flue, a pivoting principle invented by Focus in 1968 with the Gyrofocus. It is also known as a pivoting stove or swivel stove. It allows the flames to be directed towards the part of the room where you are. Of the Focus designer wood-burning stoves, six rotate: five suspended models and one floor-standing model.

A rotating Focus wood-burning stove is turned by hand, with no motor or remote control. On the rotating Focus wood-burning models, the firebox turns through 360°, with no end stop and in both directions, around its flue, which stays fixed. A ball bearing guides the rotation and keeps it smooth despite the weight of the firebox.
Focus supplies a heat-resistant glove with every model. The Slimfocus and the Bathyscafocus, for their part, come with a ‘cool-touch handle’, a key that engages with the firebox to turn it.
The Gyrofocus, the world’s first suspended, pivoting fireplace, was created in 1968 by Dominique Imbert, artist and founder of Focus. Pivoting has been part of the brand’s identity from the very beginning, long before the industry adopted the principle on a wide scale around the turn of the millennium.
Five other rotating Focus models followed: the Bathyscafocus in 1978, the Ergofocus in 1983, the Eurofocus in 1993, the Slimfocus in 2013 and the Domofocus in 2015. Reissued as closed Ecodesign-compliant wood-burning stoves between 2021 and 2022, the Gyrofocus, Ergofocus and Domofocus have kept their original 360° rotation.
In a large open-plan space, a rotating Focus wood-burning stove follows the rhythm of the day. At dinner, it is turned towards the dining table. Later in the evening, it is turned back towards the sofa in the living area. Depending on the layout, the kitchen or the bar may also lie in its line of sight. Turning the stove becomes a daily ritual.
A fixed wood-burning stove offers a view of the fire from one favoured area of the room. With a rotating stove, the orientation follows how the room is used. It changes more than just the view of the fire. Heat radiates most strongly in front of the glass: turning the firebox also directs the heat towards the area in use.
Installed in a living room that opens onto a terrace, a rotating Focus wood-burning stove can be turned to face the inside or the outside of the house. It heats the room in winter. In spring and autumn, when the terrace becomes a living space in the evening, simply turn the stove to see the flame from outside. A single installation thus adapts to uses that change with the seasons. This layout requires the safety clearances between the stove and the glazed doors to be respected.
Six Focus wood-burning stoves rotate: five suspended versions and the floor-standing Eurofocus. From the Gyrofocus to the Slimfocus, the diameter ranges from 1.25 m to 33 cm and is chosen according to the size of the room. The wood-burning Gyrofocus, the largest, has a flared shape that has become iconic. The Domofocus, with its fuller curves, measures 1.10 m in diameter, and the Japanese-inspired Ergofocus 95 cm. More compact, the Bathyscafocus (70 cm) is recognisable by its circular porthole. The suspended wood-burning Slimfocus is the most compact of all; it is also available in a fixed version. The floor-standing wood-burning Eurofocus lets you orient its large, flat glazed front.
A rotating Focus wood-burning stove needs clear space all around the firebox so that it can turn without hitting a piece of furniture or a wall. Safety clearances apply across the entire arc of rotation, not just at the front. They concern combustible materials and anything that can melt or catch fire, such as curtains.
On a suspended model, the flue supports the firebox: it is fixed to the load-bearing structure of the ceiling or roof, whose strength must be checked. Likewise, the type of floor, such as parquet or underfloor heating, is taken into account in order to propose a suitable solution.
A preliminary assessment carried out with a Focus-authorised dealer, trained by the Focus Academy, determines the range of rotation actually needed in the room, the flue route and the clearances to be respected, before any order is placed.
