A designer wood-burning stove is a stand-alone heating appliance with a closed firebox for burning wood, whose form is conceived as much for its aesthetics as for its use. Focus creates stoves and reissues its iconic suspended models in closed versions that meet Ecodesign requirements.

At the end of the first millennium, two ways of life stood in contrast in Europe: in the west, the open fireplace; in the east, the closed stove – such as the Alsatian tiled stove or the Russian stove – better suited to harsh winters. The stove favours the quality and continuity of heating; the fireplace, the spectacle of the flame.
Focus, a French brand born of the open-fireplace culture, blurs this boundary: all the glass-fronted fireplaces in its heating range are, strictly speaking, stoves, even the glazed Gyrofocus, with its organic design and 1.25 m diameter.
A designer wood-burning stove is first and foremost a heating appliance: its closed, glazed combustion chamber sets it apart from the open fireplace, designed for enjoyment rather than efficiency. This enclosure – together with patented technology on Focus models – makes it possible to meet the energy and environmental performance requirements of the European Ecodesign regulation, whatever the design chosen.
Unlike traditional floor-standing models, Focus wood-burning stoves also come in ceiling-suspended or wall-mounted versions, with no loss of heating performance, whatever the installation. Focus has turned this technical constraint into a principle: creating a combustion chamber specific to the design of each of its stoves.
The Focus wood-burning stove collection has historically brought together two families of models: the icons, originally open fireplaces and since reissued, and the models designed from the outset for heating.
Three of the brand's icons are thus now available in closed, glazed versions: the spectacular wood-burning Gyrofocus, the generously proportioned Domofocus and the Ergofocus, with its pure, ergonomic form. Each retains its original design; the only visible change is a glass front, which signals their move to stove status. All three are suspended, without touching the floor, and can be swivelled to direct the flame according to how the room is used.
All the other modern wood-burning stoves were designed closed from the outset, with no earlier open version. The Agorafocus, suspended or floor-standing, offers a panoramic view of the flames on all sides; the suspended Bathyscafocus features a circular porthole. The wall-mounted Edofocus and Emifocus fit in with a minimal footprint. The floor-standing wood-burning Grappus and Eurofocus remain the closest to the traditional stove in the way they are installed. The Slimfocus, for its part, comes in all three configurations.
All Focus stoves are made of steel, a material that lends itself to a wide variety of forms and makes the stove a design object in its own right. These stoves are also available in gas versions, among the Focus gas heating models: the energy changes, the design standards remain the same.
The sizing of a contemporary wood-burning stove depends on the volume to be heated and the level of insulation of the home. An undersized stove struggles to heat the room; an oversized one burns more wood than necessary or runs at low output: floor area, ceiling height and the home's insulation therefore guide the choice.
The Slimfocus, for example, with its 33 cm diameter, delivers a nominal output of 4.5 kW with 82% efficiency. The reissued Gyrofocus and Domofocus, in their glazed Ecodesign versions, achieve an excellent 81% efficiency with an organic design. In an airtight, low-energy house, a model with a sealed combustion chamber (room-sealed), such as the Slimfocus, is required so as not to upset the balance of the mechanical ventilation system.
An authorised dealer advises on a case-by-case basis, following a precise survey of the home.
Installing a suspended stove differs from installing a floor-standing model: the ceiling structure must bear the weight of the stove and its flue, a point to check before any project. For a wall-mounted wood-burning stove, the flue exits at the rear through the wall, or vertically, depending on the model.
In all cases, a flue is required, sized to ensure sufficient draught and avoid the risk of condensation, with clearance distances from combustible materials to be observed. A preliminary assessment with a Focus-authorised dealer confirms the feasibility of the project – ceiling, wall, floor and flue included – before any order is placed.
