Steel Fireplace

A steel fireplace is a hearth designed and made from this alloy of iron and carbon, valued for its strength and its ability to be shaped. These properties make steel a material of choice for fireplace design, where the shape of the hearth can matter even more than its function. At Focus, steel is the sole material used for both the hearth and the flue, across the entire fireplace and stove collection.

Why choose a steel fireplace?

A material suited to curved and geometric forms

Once shaped, steel lends itself equally well to strict lines and sweeping curves. Its ductility allows it to be bent and curved without compromising its strength, enabling pronounced curve radii. This flexibility allowed Dominique Imbert – sculptor, artist and founder of Focus – to give shape to the Gyrofocus: a suspended hearth with an organic form whose curvature demands exceptional mastery.

The same material also allows for strict geometric lines. Assembling several welded elements makes it possible to create complex volumes, as with the Hétérofocus or the Prométhée. This dual capacity – curves and straight lines – explains the diversity of models found in the Focus collection.

Steel also stands out for its durability. It can be recycled almost indefinitely without losing its properties. Finally, steel heats up quickly and radiates warmth into the room as soon as the fire is lit.

Black, white or rust-effect finishes, depending on the model

Focus fireplace steel is available in several finishes.

Matt black remains the collection's reference, linked to the brand's identity since its origins. White, a bold choice for a fireplace, was introduced by Dominique Imbert in 2017 across a selection of models.

For outdoor models, a black anti-corrosion paint or a rust-effect finish – developed thanks to Focus's exclusive expertise – is available: the natural rust on the surface intensifies and stabilises over time.

How does Focus shape its steel fireplaces?

Bending, forming, welding and sanding

Making a Focus fireplace follows a precise sequence. Forming gives the steel its shape: the sheet metal is bent or curved to create the design of the piece or the model. The parts are then joined by welding, then sanded to remove any trace of assembly.

Next comes painting, followed by curing, which fixes the paint durably so it can withstand the heat of the hearth. Final assembly – which can involve between 150 and 200 parts for an Ecodesign wood-burning fireplace – brings all the pieces together to create the fireplace.

The collection's four limited editions – including the Antéfocus, the first hearth, created in 1967 – depart from this rule. Their welds remain visible, unsanded, and the piece is waxed rather than painted. The Gyrofocus – created a year after the Antéfocus – illustrates the other side of steelwork: a smooth assembly with invisible welds, fully sanded and painted. Between these two founding creations lies the full range of Focus's technical craft.

Made in France, in a manufacture awarded the EPV label

Steel is transformed in the group's manufacture, in Cavaillon, Provence. This metalworking workshop, founded in 1892, joined Focus in 1993, bringing long-standing experience in working with metal and helping keep Focus's manufacturing and exclusive expertise on French soil.

The manufacture, whose trades sit at the crossroads of art and industry, was recognised in 2023 with the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant (EPV) label, a distinction awarded by the French State to a limited number of companies – 1,300 in France, in 2026. The label attests to excellence in craftsmanship, passed down and refined across generations of artisans. This closeness between design and manufacturing allows direct control over every stage, right through to shipping.

Which Focus models are made of steel?

At Focus, the entire collection is made of steel, the only metal used: the hearth and the flue are made entirely from it.

A central fireplace in steel can be floor-standing or suspended from the ceiling structure. A suspended fireplace in steel frees up the floor, held only by its flue. A wall-mounted fireplace in steel is fixed to a wall, with a slimmer structure than the central versions.

Steel also accommodates several energy sources: wood and gas, in a closed hearth for heating; gas or bioethanol in an open hearth for ambience; and electric Holographik® for playful use.
