DESIGNER FIREPLACE
A designer fireplace, whether modern or contemporary, is a fireplace whose form, use and position have been conceived together to give fire its rightful place within the space. It…
Read the articleA round fireplace refers to a hearth whose circular or spherical form has neither angles nor edges. In the Focus fireplace collection , this geometry covers three distinct categories: perfectly round hearths, organic forms that evoke the circle, and glazed hearths with a circular front.

In this category, the Emifocus, created in 1972, paved the way: a hemisphere is fixed to the wall.
Six years later, in 1978, the Bathyscafocus represented the culmination of this principle: a sphere measuring 70 cm in diameter is suspended from its flue. The curved glass front continues the round form of the hearth: this technical feature requires a particular savoir-faire, mastered by the craftspeople at Focus's French manufacture.
In 2020, the 70 cm sphere was revisited to create the Bubble® fire pit: a perfect ball, recognised with a German Design Award Gold in 2022.
Organic design is inspired by forms found in nature. Even when it is not perfectly round, it brings a natural harmony into a living space.
The Gyrofocus has illustrated this since 1968: with a diameter of 1.25 metres, suspended and pivoting, it is the spectacular organic design that founded the Focus identity. What makes it distinctive is its particularly fluid transition between the flue and the hearth, which is very difficult to achieve.
The Domofocus takes up this same language in a rounder, more compact format, with a diameter of 110 cm. Its floor-standing version, supported by its foot, is named Magmafocus.
The form of the Boafocus is inspired by the story of the snake that swallowed an elephant in "The Little Prince": the flue widens into a bulge – the 50 cm hearth. This design earned it a German Design Award in 2019.
A third category of round fireplace exists at Focus: fixed, floor-standing hearths with a fully glazed circular front. This transparency allows a continuous view of the fire from any point in the room.
The Meijifocus, created in 1993, and the Filiofocus, designed in 2000 at the request of architect Norman Foster, each rest on a circular base that houses the glazed hearth; the Filiofocus is distinguished by its suspended conical hood.
A round form softens an interior structured by straight lines. Furniture and interior architecture are now returning to organic curves , after several decades of strict lines. At Focus, roundness is not a trend: it is an identity signature, carried from the outset by Dominique Imbert, artist and founder of Focus.
Proportions vary significantly from one model to another. The Boafocus, at 50 cm, fits into a smaller space. The Gyrofocus, with its 1.25 metre diameter and the safety distances it requires, calls for a larger volume – floor area and / or ceiling height .
Three installation approaches exist, depending on the model chosen. The Bathyscafocus, Gyrofocus and Domofocus are suspended central fireplaces , attached to their flue. Central does not necessarily mean positioned at the exact centre of the room: the fireplace can be offset to structure the space more effectively . The Magmafocus, as well as the Meijifocus and Filiofocus, are central fireplaces that rest on the floor. Finally, the Emifocus is a wall-mounted fireplace .
All round models in the Focus collection are shaped from steel at the Focus manufacture. This material makes precise curves possible. Each form is cut, welded, sanded and then assembled. The finish remains understated, most often matt black, white on a few models, to highlight the purity of the design.
The Bathyscafocus and its wall-mounted version, the Emifocus, are wood-burning and require a flue as well as safety distances. The Meijifocus, in gas, meets similar criteria. The Filiofocus is available in bioethanol or gas. The electric Holographik version of the Bathyscafocus requires no connection to the outside.
The organic models follow the same logic: the Gyrofocus and Domofocus are available in wood-burning, gas and bioethanol versions, while the Boafocus remains a gas stove.
The choice is made according to both the form of the hearth and its energy . A preliminary assessment, carried out with a Focus-authorized dealer, makes it possible to verify the feasibility of the project before installation.
